The Master's Taekwondo School

Welcome to the website of the Master's Taekwondo School!  We are a ministry of New Life Baptist Church to homeschool famiies.  The Master's Taekwondo School uses the Korean martial art of Taekwondo as a tool for discipleship and leadership development.  We are chartered by Karate for Christ International and by the International Sungja Do Association.  Our instructor is Dr. Steve Mathews.  Steve holds the rank of second degree black belt from the International Sungja Do Association, and from the Kukkiwon (World Taekwondo Headquarters in Seoul, Korea).  He has received instructor certification from Karate for Christ International and the International Sungja Do Association.  He is a state Taekwondo champion, having won the gold medal in Taekwondo Poomse at the 2008 North Carolina State Games.  His instructor is grandmaster George Petrotta.

The Master's Taekwondo School meets at New Life Baptist Church at 2:00 on Mondays and Wednesdays.  There is no charge for classes.  Unfortuately, there are no student openings for the fall of 2008.

Announcements

Many thanks to Grandmaster George Petrotta of the International Sungja Do Association for his generous donation of sparring equipment.  Grandmaster Petrotta donated many chest protectors and helmets, as well as other pieces of various training equipment.

Black belt project:

The student will select a ministry project appropriate for his or her age. The student will propose the project to the instructor for approval. Upon approval, the student shall complete the project under the instructor’s supervision. Requirements for the project are as follows:
1.      The project shall bring glory to Christ.
2.      The project shall demonstrate maturity and responsibility appropriate for the student’s age.
3.      The project shall require independent work on the part of the student (this project is completed by black belt candidates, not parents).
4.      The project shall involve Taekwondo in some way.
5.      The project shall provide some benefit to other people.

As soon as the student is promoted to red belt, he or she should begin thinking
about and planning for the project. The sooner it is approved, the sooner the student can begin. For a frame of reference for thinking about this project, the Boy Scout Eagle project is a good comparison.
